This week I have interviewed the digital artist behind Soaring Anchor Designs. Soaring Anchor Designs create uniquely beautiful, feel good art prints with a focus on nature and geometry. The artist is a master of photo manipulation, the resulting images often feature animals in dreamlike fantasy scapes, and I find myself wishing I could jump into the art prints with them. I hope you enjoy the interview and seeing our collection of unique art prints from Soaring Anchor Designs.

Tell us a little about you, the artist behind Soaring anchor designs.
I am a freelance graphic designer / digital visual artist and inventor. While I primarily have been hired by others to bring their design ideas to life, I started Soaring Anchor Designs as an outlet to share some of my own designs that are floating around my head.
How did you first know you wanted to be a visual artist?
As far back as I can remember, I have always been doing something creative or artistic. Even as a small child I was always drawing or imagining characters and coming up with my own creations.
Are you a formally educated or self-taught?
I am primarily self-taught and am always trying to experiment with new styles and learn new techniques. So I am constantly trying to improve upon my skills as I go.
What is your favourite Soaring Anchor Designs piece?
As the creator and editor of my own work, I tend to be very critical, so choosing a favorite is difficult. I would just say that once a piece is completed, it is momentarily my favorite!
You call you work ‘dream inspired’, can you explain this?
I have always had a vivid imagination, and my brain never seems to “shut-off”. I think the best ideas can come to you in dreams either by day or night. The designs are like snapshots from my imagination. Hopefully, the images I create can inspire others to dream or spark their imagination in some positive way.
What inspires you to create each art piece?
It is hard to pinpoint one particular thing. I really try and draw inspiration from everything around me. I have a deep love of all animals and nature and that tends to influence my work. It really could be anything on any given day, that steers the direction of the design…music, feelings or emotions, whether it be obvious or more abstract. You can find beauty everywhere, and not just visually, so I never try and limit what inspires me. Hopefully, the images evoke an emotion from the viewer or transports them to another world. However, wherever I draw my inspiration from, I want for each viewer to have their own interpretation or make a connection with the design, in their own way.
Tell us about your technique, from planning through to the finished product.
My technique is really more of a “freestyle”. I may have one design in mind to start with, and then a different idea pops in my head, and the original design will morph into something completely different. I may even stop what I’m working on to start a new idea completely.
I try and keep ideas in a notebook in order to get them out on to paper and make room for a new one. All of my work is done digitally. I primarily work in Photoshop, where I will use many different photos, layers and blending to create the final image. I do occasionally incorporate elements I have done in Illustrator as well. Sometimes the design is quite realistic looking, and sometimes it has a more imaginary feel. It just depends on the overall look or style I am going for.
What do you do with your time when you are not designing?
Whether I am designing or not I am always accompanied by my furry son, my dog. We are just a few steps from a woodlands preserve, so we go for walks and explore, whenever we can. This also gives me an opportunity to take photos, and gather inspiration for new ideas. I find being outdoors, in the quiet of the woods, to be peaceful and somewhat therapeutic. It gives you a chance just to disconnect from everything for a bit.
